HPU's Theater and Dance presents a chilling performance of "The Addams Family"

November 6, 2023

In the eerie depths of High Point University's Hayworth Theatre, a spine-tingling sensation flooded the campus as the theater department brought Charles Addams’ spooktacular characters to life in their production of “The Addams Family.” A delightfully whimsical show combined with dark humor and a heartwarming narrative, all under the masterful direction of Jesse Galas.

The first thing that captured the audience’s attention was the stunning set and design. The stage was transformed into the gothic Addams’ mansion with intricate details such as coffin-shaped doorways, spider webs, and tombstones that made the audience feel as if they had been transported into the heart of the Addams’ household.

The lighting and sound design complete with fog and strobe lights created a perfect atmosphere, setting the stage for an unforgettable journey into the world of this peculiar family.

The true strength of this production lay in the incredibly talented cast, each of whom portrayed their characters with passion and precision. The standouts included:

  • Gomez Addams, played by Gavin Conniff, was nothing short of mesmerizing. His performance oozed charm and love for his family, making him a character we couldn’t help but adore. From the Spanish accent to the controlled vocal performance, this level of execution from a freshman is unheard of. As the lights came up for intermission, many voices could be heard chatting about Conniff’s comedic yet heartwarming portrayal of the iconic patriarch.

  • Uncle Fester, played by Oli Jefferson, provided comedic relief with their quirky character, shining as the show's narrator. Their ability to create this kind of kooky voice for Fester and sing in character as well was beyond impressive. The level of dedication of this cast can be seen through the fact that Jefferson actually shaved their head for the role, completely embodying the character.

  • Lurch, played by Reid Wheeler, left an impression with his commanding physical presence and impeccable comedic timing. Although the character says very few lines during the show, Wheeler’s facial expressions spoke for themselves and kept cracking up the audience every time he was on stage. It also must be mentioned that Wheeler performed the entire show on stilts, which is a magnificent feat in itself.

The ensemble cast deserves accolades for their demanding choreography and strong vocal performances. They created a hauntingly delightful atmosphere as they each portrayed different Addams' ancestors from beyond the grave that perfectly complemented the principal characters.

The orchestra, under the musical direction of Dr. Candice Burrows, added an extra layer of brilliance to the production. The musical numbers, including “When You’re an Addams” and “One Normal Night,” were performed with energy and precision, enchanting the audience and leaving us tapping our feet and snapping our fingers.

“The Addams Family” at High Point University is a must-see for anyone who enjoys dark comedy mingled with a message of acceptance and understanding. Congratulations to the cast and crew for conjuring up this Halloween treat that will surely continue to haunt our memories.
