It has been a year since local NASCAR legend, #31, Zach Brewer, passed away at the age of 44 on March 4, 2024.
A native of Winston-Salem, Brewer enjoyed the art of racing at a young age and began racing at only five-years-old. Throughout his career, he raced in the Goody's Dash Series, the Smart Tour and the infamous Bowman Gray Stadium. He was a three-time Dash Winner and raced for various teams, such as the Hillbilly Racing Team. While there, Zach won his last race at his hometown track in 2022.
On January 30, 2010, Zach married his high school sweetheart, Kimberly Baker Brewer. The two cherished 24 beautiful years together and during this time they had a precious baby girl, Avery Brewer, in 2014. It was clear to everyone that knew him that his girls were his pride and joy and number one supporters.
Recently, the Florence Motor Speedway in South Carolina led a special memorial race on the one-year anniversary of Zach’s passing. To kick off the race, Kimberly, Avery and Zach’s sister, Hannah, gave the command, “Gentlemen start your engines.” Following this, his dad, Doug Brewer, drove Zach’s car for a lap around the track. While this was happening, the crowd waved their custom #31 flags high to honor him. Many mixed emotions filled the air as the crowd celebrated the incredible and inspiring Zach Brewer.
Kimberly shared her emotions during the one-year anniversary tribute race, expressing how much the constant show of support truly means to her and Avery as they continue to navigate this journey.
“My first emotion going into the Zach Brewer memorial race was sadness. I was sad I was going into a race to remember Zach instead of cheering him on during the race. However, that all changed when I got there and saw all the ways and things that were done to honor him, it was very overwhelming. But to hear all the sweet words and stories was truly heartwarming. To have my guy honored and remembered in such a way, helped walking into the one-year anniversary with smiles,” Kimberly said.
“The constant support Avery and I have been given has been unreal, but much appreciated,” Kimberly said. “It’s a great feeling to know we have a support system there for us while navigating this grief journey. We are beyond blessed with some of the best friends and family.”
There is no doubt that Zach Brewer was loved by everyone that knew him. The positive mark he left on the racing industry is like no other, and he will always be remembered for his passion, enthusiasm and caring heart.
He will forever be missed, but there is peace in knowing that he is racing around the golden gates of Heaven.
