Christy and Brad Davis discovered their love for baking at an early age.
The pair met when they were just nine years old, and they are now the co-owners of Cupcake Cuties Cafe and Bakery in Wallburg, N.C.
“I’ve baked since I was little. Throughout middle school, [Brad] was my taste tester,” Christy said. “He’s been right along with me in this whole journey.”
Their shared love for baking and Brad’s taste-testing skills laid the foundation for their journey as business owners. For five years, the couple baked and sold goods out of their home before opening their first storefront.
“It helped us when we opened because we had a lot of customers that were already coming,” Christy said.
However, launching their business wasn’t without challenges.
“We sacrificed a lot of things. My husband was an account manager, so he quit his job when we opened. He had a company truck, he gave that back, so we went down to one car,” Christy said.
The Davis’ also chose to avoid taking out loans to fund their business.
“It made us work harder because we didn’t have money that we borrowed, so what we sold and how hard we worked helped us,” Christy said.
Cupcake Cuties started in a smaller location, which now serves as an event space. The move to their current location marked a turning point for the business, providing more space, a larger kitchen and the ability to expand their menu.
Riley Woodall, a former employee who worked at Cupcake Cuties throughout high school, witnessed this transformation firsthand.
“It was so crazy for me to move from a smaller space into something so big. I truly got to see how much they had expanded,” Woodall said.
Despite the growth, one thing about the bakery has never changed: its dedication to the community.
“Even though it has expanded and so much growth has happened, they still have that same family atmosphere and care for their community,” Woodall said.
From the very beginning, Brad and Christy focused on creating a space where families would feel welcome.
“We had found that we were interested in having a lot of family things, and we also noticed that wasn’t easy to find. I know when we first started, we had smaller kids, so we thought about things that we would want to do with our kids and things that we just couldn’t find,” Christy said.
Cupcake Cuties’ commitment to a family-first philosophy is what makes it stand out, creating a special atmosphere for both guests and staff. This approach comes to life through events like Mother/Son and Father/Daughter nights, PJ parties and visits from Santa, offering families the chance to make unforgettable memories together.
“That’s something they’ve kept up from the beginning, and I think that’s really special,” Woodall said.
