Most people look forward to Thanksgiving break at HPU but "theater kids" also wait in anticipation to get back for the spring musical and play auditions!

The spring musical is the hit show, "Alice by Heart," which is inspired by the classic story, "Alice in Wonderland." The show follows Alice Spencer, a young girl during the London Blitz in 1941. Alice takes refuge in a London Tube station and learns to confront grief, loss and love with the assistance of her favorite book, "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland."

On the contrary, the play following the musical focuses on one of Shakespeare’s most prominent works, "Much Ado About Nothing," a story of two romantic pairings once a group of soldiers arrive in the town, Messina.
​
Jesse Galas, professor and the director for the spring musical, is excited for the auditions and is looking for students with passion amongst other things.
​
"In general, I am looking for a student who is confident, coachable, collaborative, and reliable. They need to have excellent communication skills, including enunciation and vocal projection, as well as the ability to act on pitch," said Galas. "I want to work with someone who understands the commitment of an 8–10-week rehearsal process and is excited to learn."
​
Galas wants the audience watching to "consider how their childhood experiences have shaped their lives, whether or not they find themselves continuing to deal with the past in the present, and especially what a tremendous impact the imagination plays in creating the world as they wish it to be."
​
Galas doesn’t want auditionees to be nervous or worried of making a mistake.
​
"Smile, do your best. If you screw up, keep going. Don’t blame anyone for your mistakes, including yourself," said Galas.
​

Auditions take place on Monday, December 2 from 6:00-10:00 p.m. in the Empty Space Theater.
