Style on Point: HPU's creative fashion club

Fashion has always been a versatile, everchanging forum for a person to express themselves. When this is applied to college students, there is a good mix of students who care about the way they dress, while some others call it a day with their pjs. This is what Style on Point saw occur on campus and wanted to give everyone an equal opportunity towards embracing their inner fashion icon through photoshoots, models and even a magazine.

The founder, Olivia Cirocco, wanted to give college students a creative vision where they could be actively involved in fashion: “Fashion is lacking at HPU and we wanted to create a welcoming program where students are able to express their love for the industry whether that comes from modeling, writing, styling, social media or even just reading and enjoying our issues once they are published."

Now, this idea was not just created overnight, this took a very long process alongside a lot of thinking and planning before actually executing the program. The two founders, Olivia and Kelly Linder were discussing this for ages before even considering making it a reality.

“We shared a vision for a fashion magazine on campus and discussed this idea with our advisor, at the time of course neither of us had known each other so she had made the connection. The day we met up at Cottrell, Kelly discussed what she saw for the future of the magazine, and Olivia discussed the potential of the magazine and the vision she had from her freshman year. From that day on, Style On Point was born.”

This just goes to show that this entire program has been thought out since her freshman year and she has spent years putting together the magazine. Now, Style on Point has a lot to offer for students alike, no matter what their interests are and their major, so everyone is allowed to join this program.

However, with their primary grand finale being a magazine, a goal in mind was a good starting point, “The goal of Style On Point is to be a creative outlet for fashion gurus not only at High Point University but for other universities in North Carolina. To educate the college girl on fashion, relationship advice, beauty tips, all in hopes of making her life away from home a tad easier.”

If all of this strikes an interest to you may be curious as to what the process is to get into such a program, which is fairly simple and is similar to a club or school based program setting, “We gather at the end of the semester to discuss ideas for the next issue (meet in December to discuss April). At these meetings we’ll come up with an overarching theme that supports the three photoshoots we set up throughout the semester. These photoshoots take a lot of time and effort. Typically we start prepping 2 weeks in advance finding the right location and models. Models, recently, have been hand picked and scouted by girls part of our team. Once we know who is modeling, we choose their outfits. Articles typically go along with the theme of the magazine and topics are also picked ahead of time for our writers to choose from. Writers may inquire but go through an interview and application process.”

This goes to show how committed the staff, members and even writers are to create an outlet in which creativity can flourish amongst the arts and in general creative people. Each page of the magazine is a story of its own, educating others to be themselves, embrace their own sense of fashion and overall receiving advice on things they may be hesitant about.

Style On Point is a gateway into the colorful and versatile world of fashion. Keep your eyes peeled as they release an official magazine every semester and post photoshoots and fashion updates on their Instagram page @styleonpoint.hpu
