Grey Rich’s final film masterpiece at HPU: Light of the Passing Train
April 3, 2024
Grey Rich, a High Point University student from Cary, NC, has been making waves in the university’s film scene since 2019. With his previous successes including “Dream, Above and Beyond” in 2020 and “Doll in the Dark” in 2022, Rich has become a celebrated figure among students, faculty, and staff alike. However, his latest project, “Light of The Passing Train,” promises to be a departure from his previous works, delving into deep personal struggles he faced during his junior year of college.
Scheduled for release on April 5, 2024, in HPU’s Wanek Cinema, “Light of the Passing Train” has already garnered significant attention. Nominated for “Best Original Screenplay” at the international film festival Lonely Wolff and receiving accolades from various other festivals, the film is poised to make a significant impact.
Rich’s inspiration for the film stemmed from his own experiences, as he explains, “The main character Roy is inspired by the version of me who went through a troubling junior year of college. I created him, and like so many who have seen the film, can relate to the situations that he is put through.”
President Qubein himself has praised Rich’s work, acknowledging its emotional weight and the talent of the cast and crew involved. Rich also credits Professor Bob Stec for his guidance in storytelling, which elevated the film to new heights.
The cast delivers standout performances with Andrew “Andy” McNichol and Merran Decker leading the ensemble. McNichol, who portrays the lead role of Roy Conrad, expresses his hope that the film will inspire faith in both oneself and a higher power. Decker, in her role as Taylor Aster, emphasizes the complexity of the characters and the importance of the film’s message.
Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of HPU students contributed to bringing Rich’s vision to life. From cinematography to editing, their collective effort ensured that “Light of the Passing Train” resonates with audiences on a profound level.
Rich himself sees this film as a culmination of his colligate journey, stating “This is my send-off film; I could not be prouder of it.” He acknowledges the collaborative effort that went into crafting the story, underscoring the contributions of every individual involved.
As the premiere date approaches, anticipation is building among the HPU community and beyond. With its compelling narrative and powerful performances, “Light of the Passing Train” promises to be a cinematic experience like no other.
The premiere on April 5 will be an event to remember, featuring a cast Q&A session following the screening. Formal attire is suggested, and attendees are encouraged to RSVP in advance due to limited seating.
“Light of the Passing Train” is not just a film; it’s a testament to the talent and dedication of HPU’s students and faculty. Don’t miss your chance to witness Grey Rich’s final masterpiece unfold on the big screen.
