From the glistening fabrics to the captivating sounds of music was heard coming from the beloved Seacrest Gallery, located at Hayworth Fine Art Center.
This is the second Sustainable Fashion Show from the Thrift Point Club. The major goal of this show was being able to show the HPU community how you can still be in style, no matter what you are wearing.
The show began with attendees lined out the door, anticipating the excitement for the doors to open. Once seated, each attendee was handed a print out of the rules which encouraged them to cheer on the models once the show actually started. The decades started all the way from the 60’s and continued through until the early 2000’s or better known as, the Y2K movement.
There was a heartfelt speech given before the start from the current EC members, who are all current seniors, who were talking about how proud they were of the growth of the club, including the growth of one another and their friendship. Flowers were handed out and lots of hugs and tears were shed and given, it was a bittersweet moment, which soon transitioned the attention towards the fabulous models.
The show was in order from the oldest decade to the most recent which was the early 2000’s. The models strutted their stuff as the announcer described each outfit in detail as well as a bit about why each model wore what they wore.
“The only thing that was special [to my outfit] was the headband I wore, which is from my hometown and I got a lot of compliments from it” said Sarah Beychok.
Throughout all of this, a lot of the outfits were layered and dynamic because these were pieces that were all thrifted or secondhand. Now, before even the show there was a lot of time, effort and dedication in order to prepare for something like this. There was a photographer present as well as HPU Vision broadcasting the show, so that students and even parents who couldn't attend could chime in and see the models shine.
During this process there were also rehearsals but also some chaos behind the scenes, “Behind the scenes was just as you could imagine for a fashion show. At times it was very chaotic, especially when outfit changes were taking place. Thankfully, we had an awesome team who was ready to help each other and give pointers any time there were complications. Overall, it was a very supportive and uplifting environment that anyone could flourish in," said Taylor Chapman.
Even though there were struggles the whole team and models were able to push through. One may wonder why did these models even decide to do something like this in the first place?
"I wanted to model because I just thought it would be a really great experience and also my friend, Chloe, recommended me to model so I just went for it,” Said Beychok.
Being encouraged to step out of your comfort can definitely be beneficial especially if it means that you will have friends and others there supporting you. That was for sure the overall message of this show which had a tremendous turnout and overall it seemed like everyone that was involved thought that it went according to plan.
“My favorite thing about the show was the energy. The energy from the models, crew, and viewers was nothing short of amazing. Everyone had an amazing time and I can’t wait to see what happens next year,” said Chapman.
With the old EC members taking a leave towards graduation it will be up to them to acquire a new, fresh team who is welcoming to bring new ideas to the table in order to keep the club intact. The elections for a new EC were held a couple months ago and the seniors, who will soon be alumni, will say their farewells to a club. But they will always have the memory of a fashion show, that has not only impacted each other, but has brought immense joy to the HPU community.
