Behind the seams: a spotlight on the Theater and Dance Costume Department

March 6, 2024

Lights dim, music begins, and the curtain rises, but have you ever stopped to think about the intricate details that bring the characters to life on stage? Behind the scenes is a hidden world of creativity and craftsmanship – the Costume Department. This essential yet often overlooked component of theater and dance productions plays a pivotal role in transforming the performers into the fantastical beings we see on stage.

The Costume Department is the heartbeat of any production, responsible for weaving the visual tapestry that enhances the narrative and captivates the audience. From modern musicals to contemporary dance pieces, every production relies on the artistic vision and technical skill of the individuals working tirelessly behind the scenes.

One of the key aspects of the Costume Department is the collaborative nature of the work. Mallory Ward, Costume Shop Manager, and Zane Kealy, Assistant Professor of Costume Design, come together to create a seamless blend of historical accuracy, artistic interpretation, and practical functionality.

The process of creating the costumes for a show begins way before the garments are made or picked. Extensive research is done to make sure the characters are dressed in clothing accurately for the time the production is set in. The costuming for The Real Inspector Hound set in the 1920s is vastly different from the costumes for Lone Star Laundry & Bourbon set in 1970s Texas.

Costume designers immerse themselves in the world of the play or dance, studying historical references, cultural influences, and even the psychology of the characters. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that every costume not only complements the performers but enriches the overall narrative.

Step into the costume shop below the Empty Space Theater, and you will find a welcoming and creative environment. Tags are being sewn into costumes, alterations, measurements are being taken, ironing, and so much more going on as characters are brought to life.

However, the Costume Department doesn’t just focus on aesthetics; it also considers the practical aspects of costume design. Performers need to move freely, and costumes must withstand the physical demands of dance routines or intense stage combat. The department works diligently to strike a balance between style and functionality, ensuring that the costumes not only look stunning but also serve the needs of the performers.

Beyond the technicalities, the Costume Department contributes to the overall immersive experience of the audience. The visual impact of a well-designed costume can transport the viewers to different eras, worlds, or even dimensions. It’s a silent yet powerful force that enhances the storytelling and creates a connection between the audience and the characters on stage.

Next time you attend a theater or dance production on campus, take a moment to appreciate the meticulous craftsmanship and artistic vision of the Costume Department. Their work is a testament to the collaborative spirit that brings a production to life, proving that the magic of the stage extends far beyond the actors in the spotlight. The Costume Department is the unseen hero, adding a layer of enchantment to the world of performing arts, one stitch at a time.
