A chorus in the cafe
January 22, 2024
As the hustle and bustle of the lunch rush at High Point University’s Slane Cafe starts, a melody begins to weave its way through the dining hall.
A sound that has become synonymous with the heartbeat of the university, one of the many masterminds behind it is local musician, Evan Blackerby. His music provides the perfect backdrop to our shared memories. I had the chance to catch up with Blackerby one afternoon to learn more about the man behind the music.
His musical journey began at a young age right here around the High Point area. Blackerby said he began writing songs and playing an old guitar he found in his grandparents house. This started in the eighth grade to impress some girls, and to this day he has never given up on it.
One of Blackerby’s biggest inspirations was one of his old teachers who was a writer. The teacher would write songs and play them for the class. Blackerby shared that he would go home after class and try to copy what he saw his teacher do.
“I spat out some dumb eighth-grade songs,” said Blackerby, but it was the beginning of his beautiful relationship with music.
Drawing inspiration from musicians like Jackson Browne, The Beatles and Van Morrison, Blackerby developed a sound that resonates with students seeking a break from the academic grind.
“A lot of my work ends up being at private events with a mix of my own songs and covers of other people’s music,” said Blackerby.
Beyond the music, Blackerby has succeeded in creating a genuine connection with the campus community. His performances act as a gathering point, bringing students together to unwind, connect, and celebrate the unique spirit of our campus.
“Some of the cafeteria workers will be dancing and singing along with me, creating a really cool atmosphere,” said Blackerby.
Blackerby shared that he works to “create a vibe” with his music. He wants to make a space that is lowkey where people can connect. He compared his music to wallpaper, adding flavor to the room. He has to read the audience to create the right space for them. “Sometimes you aren’t the center of attention; you just add to the atmosphere and background,” said Blackerby.
As Blackerby continues to evolve as an artist, he remains committed to enhancing the college experience through his music. He recently released a brand new single called “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” and continues to work on recording a full-length album in the future.
So, the next time you are drawn to the cafe by the soothing strums of a guitar or the emotive notes of a singer, it is most likely Evan Blackerby. His melodies may just be in the background of our college memories, but they’re undoubtedly a thread that binds us together in this extraordinary chapter of our lives.
